The South African market
South Africa is a net importer of retail solutions indicating that the local manufacturers cannot meet the demand for these products. The table below shows the balance of trade for the key retail solutions categories:

In 2006, South Africa imported lighting to the value of US$39.0 million, Point of Sale systems worth US$29.6 million, fridges, freezers and display cabinets worth US$13.2 million, vending machines worth US$9.4 million and furniture to house fridges and freezers worth US$6.4 million.

Over the three-year period from 2004 to 2006, imports in all the key categories increased significantly. Furniture for fridges and freezers increased by 194%, followed by fridges and freezers, display units etc. which increased by 183%, vending machines by 96%, point-of-sale equipment by 65% and lighting by 60%.
