SAITEX introduces Retail Ready products
to its 17th annual Trade Show

The 17th annual Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) introduces a focus on Retail and Light Industrial categories to its already world renowned multi-sector trade show in 2010. Established in 1993 and acquired in 2008 by specialist trade show organisers Exhibition Management Services (EMS), SAITEX 2010 is set to be a bumper event for exhibitors, suppliers, traders and consumers.

“Once again, SAITEX will run simultaneously with Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) Food and Beverage Expo,” says EMS Managing Director John Thomson. “SAITEX is the premier gateway to Africa and has successfully promoted trade between African and overseas companies for 17 years.” SAITEX and AB7 will take place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg from 25 to 27 July 2010.

“SAITEX is the only multi-sector trade fair of its kind in Africa with dozens of exhibitors showcasing products, services and business opportunities from around the world,” says Thomson. “Exhibitors can expect exposure to more than 12 000 agents, distributors, exporters, importers and retailers dealing through established trade networks in over 40 countries in Africa and abroad. This year, SAITEX’s multi-sector character will be fine-tuned to emphasise a more export-ready and retail-ready exhibit profile to attract even more international trade visitors.”

The scope of products exhibited at SAITEX is vast and encompasses the full spectrum of retail goods, from FMCG and retail-ready products, textiles, sports equipment, footwear and leather products, to home ware and décor, kitchenware and appliances, white goods and cookware, indoor, outdoor and office furniture, cellular communications, electronic equipment and home entertainment.

The simultaneous hosting of SAITEX and AB7 Food and Beverage Expo at the same venue enables exhibitors and trade visitors to attend both shows. This added dimension further extends the multi-sector platform to include the food, grocery and beverage industries – predicted to be a major growth sector in 2010. EMS will organise an internet-based matchmaking programme for interested delegates with pre-profiled, pre-selected and pre-scheduled matchmaking meetings for all three days of both shows.

“In line with government support of trade initiatives, SAITEX will also cater for those developmental government agencies and NGOs involved in trade, as well as financial and business service providers, import and export agents and professional industry and trade associations,” says Thomson, adding that transport and logistics service providers will also have representation at SAITEX.

SAITEX showcases global business opportunities to SA Entrepreneurs
“Business opportunities are like buses – there’s always another one coming along.” These are wise words indeed from Richard Branson, billionaire founder of the Virgin Group.
Branson’s rise to fame and fortune began with him publishing a small student magazine at age 16, followed by an audio record mail order business at 20. His spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation fed his ambition to succeed and led to him creating his prominent brand – Virgin – on which to build a diverse business empire.
Branson’s kind of entrepreneurial spirit is becoming increasingly familiar in the business world, even in South Africa, with its unemployment rate standing at 25% (according to Statistics South Africa). An ever growing number of bold individuals are turning to entrepreneurship to gain a foothold and make their mark in the business sector.
Powerful networking platform and information resource
The 17th annual Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) is a valuable resource for large established enterprises, small businesses and budding entrepreneurs to market their goods and services, and also to source new products, suppliers, customers and markets. SAITEX offers substantial marketing opportunities and business potential with numerous networking platforms for both exhibitors and trade visitors who want to expand their business reach. SAITEX takes place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg from 25-27 July 2010.
“SAITEX presents entrepreneurs and business owners with a unique opportunity to meet hundreds of new suppliers and access new products from trade partners around the world” says John Thomson, Managing Director of Exhibition Services (EMS), organisers of the event.  “We can quite categorically state that there is no other platform in the country –or indeed on the continent- that showcases so many international companies wanting to introduce their products into the African Market. They want to do business; it’s now up to South Africans to pick up that initiative”. A vast range of products will be on show, encompassing the full spectrum of retail goods, from FMCG and retail-ready products, textiles, sports equipment, footwear and leather products, to home ware and décor, kitchenware and appliances, white goods and cookware, indoor, outdoor and office furniture, cellular communications, electronic equipment and home entertainment.
“Exhibitors will have access to more than 12 000 agents, distributors, exporters, importers and retailers dealing through established trade networks in over 40 countries in Africa and abroad.”

This year SAITEX will also place emphasis on the Light Industrial sector, with exhibitors showcasing DIY products and supplies, welding equipment, plumbing and electrical supplies, engineering goods and services, carpentry, building and construction products and supplies, tools and manufacturing technologies, and office equipment.
Established in 1993 and acquired in 2008 by specialist trade show organisers EMS, SAITEX is the only multi-sector trade fair of its kind on the African continent.  The event hosts hundreds of exhibitors showcasing thousands of products, services and business opportunities from all corners of the world. It has developed a reputation for translating export, import, development and investment opportunities into solid business transactions.
SMEs lay foundations for African business development
“Small and medium enterprises play a vital role in the growth of the South African economy,” adds Thomson. “According to a report from the South African Reserve Bank, the total economic output from small and medium enterprises comprises almost half the country’s gross domestic product, and employs over 60 percent of the total active labour force. It’s clear that that the energetic promotion of small and medium enterprises can drastically reduce unemployment.”
At the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship held in the US in April, the Chief Executive Officer of the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA), GA_googleFillSlot( "AllAfrica_Story_InsetA" ); GA_googleCreateDomIframe('google_ads_div_AllAfrica_Story_InsetA' ,'AllAfrica_Story_InsetA'); Stephen Hayes, said that entrepreneurs were absolutely vital to Africa's economic development and growth. “There is probably not another thing more needed in Africa."
“Africa needs more mid-level entrepreneurs,” added Anthony Carroll, Managing Director of Washington-based international business advisory company Manchester Trade. GA_googleFillSlot( "AllAfrica_Story_InsetC" ); GA_googleCreateDomIframe('google_ads_div_AllAfrica_Story_InsetC' ,'AllAfrica_Story_InsetC'); "These are the people who are going to be the engines of their economies because they can create jobs and wealth, move economies forward, and be champions of good governance and transparency.”
Kevin Boyd, Director of the Africa programme at the US Department of Commerce says the key to entrepreneurship and economic growth is to have the private sector doing things. “It is often entrepreneurs who actually create jobs and stimulate economic growth across the continent. Entrepreneurship is not a destination; it is a journey.”
An even bigger contingent of international visitors and exhibitors will attend the co-located SAITEX show and Africa’s Big Seven Food and Beverage trade show this year. According to Thomson, all available exhibition space for both shows is sold out. “I cannot stress enough the importance of these two trade shows for small business owners and entrepreneurs in Southern Africa,” concludes Thomson.
Last year the co-located SAITEX and AB7 events attracted 401 companies from 39 countries. They showcased 392 product categories, featuring 2117 different items. The combined attendance of 12 708 visitors came from over 40 different countries.
SAITEX also offers a free and highly effective internet-based business matchmaking programme providing exhibitors and visitors with pre-profiled, pre-selected and pre-scheduled matchmaking meetings for all three days of both shows.

SAITEX – Where business comes looking for YOU

There is no doubt that the global economic crisis of 2009 dealt a major blow to business around the world, and especially to local entrepreneurs in South Africa. There was a 40 percent drop in the number of start-up businesses in 2009 compared to 2008, and many existing entrepreneurs struggled to survive the worst recession in a quarter of a century.
The worst of the recession is over and the process of recovery is underway, with every business enterprise – small and large – looking for those elusive but very real opportunities that could quite easily be the next brilliant idea, hot new product or essential customer service.
Discover Opportunities at SAITEX
Some of the best places to discover these opportunities are at trade shows. So whether you want to start a business, expand your existing business or simply discover new ideas and explore new opportunities, the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) is  the ideal starting point. SAITEX offers the biggest range international business opportunities ever brought together on the African continent. SAITEX provides a vast resource for entrepreneurs to see the latest innovative products from around the world firsthand, discover new ideas and meet potential suppliers, customers and business partners.

“SAITEX presents entrepreneurs and business owners with a unique opportunity to meet hundreds of new suppliers and access new products from trade partners around the world,” says John Thomson, Managing Director of Exhibition Management Services, organisers of the two shows. “We can quite categorically state that there is no other platform in the country – or indeed on the continent – that showcases so many international companies wanting to introduce their products into the African Market. They want to do business; it’s now up to South African entrepreneurs to pick up the initiative.”
SAITEX will be showcasing thousands of products from hundreds of companies from 33 countries around the world including Brazil, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Great Britain,  the United States and many others.
Thousands of Consumer Products on Display
Types of products on display include building and construction, camping and leisure, carpets and soft furnishings, DIY and garden equipment, electric and electronic appliances, leather products and footwear, indoor and outdoor furniture, generators, pumps and compressors, tools and hardware, home entertainment, kitchen and cookware, packaging machinery, stationery, clothing, cosmetics, office equipment, plumbing and sanitary ware, sports and gym equipment, vending machines and white goods.
Now in its 17th year, the Southern African International Trade Exhibition for consumer goods takes place alongside Africa’s Big Seven Food and Beverage Expo, at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand near Johannesburg from 25 to 27 July. These two co-located shows provide an excellent multi-sector platform for all levels of business owners to display their products to a global audience, and also to discover new products and services available, and meet entrepreneurs from around the world who “make things happen”.

“Business opportunities are like buses – there’s always another one coming along,” This is the philosophy of Richard Branson, the billionaire founder of the Virgin Group. Branson’s rise to fame and fortune began with him publishing a small student magazine at age 16, and then founding an audio record mail order business at the age of 20. The Ideal Platform for Business Connections

“I cannot stress enough the importance of these two trade shows for small business owners and entrepreneurs in Southern Africa,” says Thomson. “Both SAITEX and AB7 are well known for translating active face-to-face participation between exhibitors and trade visitors into solid business transactions.”

International buyers  at SAITEX lure KwaZulu-Natal business

“SAITEX, the 17th Southern African International Trade Exhibition provides a golden opportunity for South African companies to showcase their products and services to international buyers, whilst keeping abreast of new developments from local competitors and international suppliers,” says John Thomson, Managing Director of Exhibition Management Services (EMS), organisers of this 500 exhibitor event, which takes place from 25 to 27 July 2010 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg.

“But more importantly, the show’s international flavour provides a perfect opportunity for local buyers to source new products and suppliers from overseas, identify new trends, whilst South African companies exhibiting can find new customers and markets around the world,” adds Thomson.

World class networking opportunities for all business and industry sectors
“With visitors from 45 countries and exhibitors from 39, SAITEX is the ideal networking resource for business people from all sectors of the economy. It provides a focused environment to gather information, compare products, hold discussions and conclude deals and agreements. This is particularly important for established and aspiring business owners operating in KwaZulu-Natal, one of South Africa’s most productive regions. They need to be aware of the latest trends and innovations within their respective industries, and SAITEX is the place to do that. The KZN Pavilion will be the largest at the show yet again, indicating the province’s leading position in South African business, and its unwavering commitment to SAITEX.”

KZN Trade Promotion Agency showcases province’s ingenuity
Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN), the province’s trade and investment promotion agency, will field 20 exhibiting companies at SAITEX this year. Nelisiwe Makhaye, the export promotions manager at TIKZN, sees SAITEX as a strong market development initiative for KwaZulu-Natal business owners to compete in African and other global markets. “We are using SAITEX 2010 to exhibit world-class products from KZN producers, and the show will provide our established companies and emerging exporters with valuable market exposure.”

One interesting KZN exhibitor is Mpilende Foods, a young BEE company in the food manufacturing industry launched two years ago by Mfundo Thango. The company manufactures fortified food products and supplements for combating ill health and malnutrition, especially for the frail, the aged, the bed-ridden, infants and the terminally ill. Customers include public health facilities, social development programmes and education feeding schemes.

Thango has a special interest in exporting his products to war torn African states as food supplements for malnutrition and supplementary food products for food aid. In fact, Mpilende Foods has been approved as a preferred supplier of basic food commodities by the UN World Food Programme, and by the Ghanaian Ministry of Defence for dry rations packs for its armed forces. The company is shortlisted as a supplier of ration packs for the Ugandan Defence Ministry.
Mpilende Foods won the Best New Business award in the 2009 SMME Africa awards, an initiative of the Africa-Growth Institute. "The award says to the whole of Africa that you can venture into a new industry if you have the focus. I hope that it will motivate other people," says Thango. "The exposure will do us good; it’s a valuable recommendation, showing that a small business can compete with the world."
When Lungi Sokhulu learned the art of weaving from her grandparents in Gamalakhe, near Margate in KwaZulu-Natal, she never dreamed it would lead to a unique business venture making her one of KZN's leading entrepreneurs.

After studying fashion design in Durban and working for a fashion designer in Cape Town, Lungi soon realised she wanted to be independent and the idea of using recycled newspaper for fashion accessories and décor items was born. By cutting, rolling, weaving, plaiting and circling, by sewing, gluing and varnishing, she devised her unique range of products, winning first prize in the SAB New Entrepreneurs Kick-Start Competition. Her company, Back2Life, now exports her flagship barrel bags and stylish clutch bags, fruit bowls, place mats and earrings countries in Europe.
The Durban International Convention Centre is another successful company exhibiting at SAITEX for the first time. CEO Miller Matola says he is taking advantage of the invitation from TIKZN to market the ICCD to local and international customers. “Our reason for exhibiting is simple; we commissioned a study by the UCT Graduate School of Business and discovered that the ICCD activities contributed R2.3-billion to South Africa's Gross Domestic Product in 2009. That’s worth talking about,” says Matola.
“TIKZN’s ongoing participation at SAITEX indicates our desire to help KZN companies attract new customers from the international market, find new agents for their products and explore more trade opportunities with African countries,” concludes Makhaye.

Africa’s biggest multi-sector Trade Expo showcases international products
As the only multi-sector trade fair of its kind on the continent, SAITEX promises to be a cosmopolitan affair, with companies from 39 countries around the world exhibiting thousands of innovative products in over 400 categories, providing countless potential business opportunities for buyers. Last year the co-located shows attracted 401 companies from 39 countries, and showcased 2117 different products in 392 categories. SAITEX goes Hardware

The Southern African International Trade exhibition (SAITEX) is well known in the trade arena, and has enjoyed healthy visitor attendance and trade support in post apartheid South Africa. SAITEX was instrumental in bringing previously sanctioned businesses and products into the country after 1994. The show lost its competitive edge after a 15-year run and was summarily abandoned by its previous owners.

Rebirth of a brand
Acquired by new owners Exhibition Management Services (EMS) in October 2008, SAITEX has been rebranded, repositioned and rescheduled to take place alongside Africa’s Big Seven (AB7), EMS’s flagship Food and Beverage Industry event. AB7 already boasts substantial visitor attendance of more than 7 500 buyers, from wholesalers, major chains, supermarkets, retailers and convenience stores.

Relaunched in July 2009 as a ‘Business opportunities exhibition’ for retail products, SAITEX attracted over 12 000 visitors in its first rebranded outing, three times more than previous shows.

News of the expo’s success has spread around the world. SAITEX 2010, to be held at the Gallagher Convention Centre from July 25 to 27, will be more than twice the size of 2009, with literally thousands of new retail products including hardware, home wares, garden tools and furniture, lighting and light industrial equipment being offered by exhibitors from 39 countries.

SAITEX going forward
When asked how EMS was able to make SAITEX a success so quickly, Managing Director John Thomson emphasised the concept of co-location. “To put it quite plainly, the two events happen at the same time and place, so that their exhibit profiles virtually reflect the contents and layout of a Makro store. AB7 represents the food section whilst the mainstream SAITEX covers hardware, home wares, house wares, DIY, office and company equipment, appliances, kitchenware, clothing, home entertainment and other sectors. It works for mass stores and now it’s working for us.

“The only material difference – and it is very material – is that Makro interfaces with the public; SAITEX and AB7 interface with the retail trade. Our visitors are all the retail buyers out there. And with both events displaying thousands of products from 39 countries, visitors no longer have to incur the expense of going overseas to source new products and suppliers.

“I would encourage advertisers and readers of DIY Trade News to attend this year and give us their feedback on the show, as we intend to get more involved in the Hardware and DIY sectors for 2011.

“All these exhibitors form just a part of the offering,” adds Thomson. “There is so much more to see at SAITEX. It’s a multi-sector trade show, the biggest of its kind on in Africa. Last year the co-located shows attracted 401 companies from 39 countries, and showcased 2117 different products in 392 categories. Visitors came from 45 different countries resulting in a combined attendance of 12 708 people. Those numbers easily translate into countless international business opportunities,” concludes Thomson.

SAITEX gives suppliers a heads-up on projects in Africa

Increasing levels of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Africa are creating opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs to tap into the lucrative project development market. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows are expected to reach $1.8 trillion in 2011 and FDI inflows into Africa rose to a record level of $88 billion in 2008.  To enable the private sector to fully access these, a dedicated business briefing will take place on 27 July 2010 alongside the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand, South Africa.

Entitled ‘Projects and Products for Selected Southern and Eastern African Countries’, the event will feature speakers from seven key African nations – Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The session is geared to provide an opportunity for suppliers of goods and services as well as potential investors to learn of upcoming development projects in key Southern and East African markets, and to identify specific supply needs.

“We have put together a business intelligence event that is both practical and business-orientated”, says Paul Runge, spokesperson and Managing Director of Africa Project Access. APA is a consultancy that specialises in providing early alerts of projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. The company also monitors major funding agencies operating in Africa such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank. “SAITEX is a buy-and-sell portal, and we want to give funders, contractors and suppliers the opportunity to learn about upcoming investment projects in Africa.”

“This business briefing is great for companies, consultants, exhibitors and suppliers at SAITEX to learn about products that will be needed for specific projects, which range from agriculture, water and sanitation, transport and infrastructure, to mining, construction and health services. We want to connect projects with products, and SAITEX is the ideal place to do this.”

“We are targeting as wide an audience as possible to benefit each and every member of the various industries represented at SAITEX. We have focused on these specific African countries because they are the major markets for export volumes, and thus the most relevant for the kind of goal we are trying to achieve.”

“There are many challenges inherent in doing business in Africa, but probably the most crucial is the flow of in-market intelligence. In order for suppliers to properly tender, they need to know about projects very early on, and this is often not achievable. The briefing will address this by giving suppliers a heads-up about what projects are in the pipeline, so the process of intelligence-gathering can be improved.

“Although there are many large corporations involved in African projects such as Nampak, MTN and certain retail giants, there are also many opportunities for small businesses to provide for niche markets. For example, companies providing specialised glass products for hotels and other construction projects, particularly in Zimbabwe, are doing very well because of briefing in-market intelligence. In terms of sector growth, we are seeing a dramatic increase in agriculture-focused projects, particularly those which are donor funded.

Ultimately, we hope that this business briefing will let companies know what is actually happening in the relevant regions in Africa, and how they can benefit from these projects. There is also a lot to be said for prioritising markets – in order for companies to target the project that will be most profitable for them, they desperately need the in-market intelligence and knowledge that this briefing will give them.”

One upcoming project is the Botswana-Morupule B Generation and Transmission project. The objective is to assist the Botswana Power Corporation to develop a reliable and affordable supply of electricity, provide energy security; promote alternative energy resources for low-carbon growth and build institutional capacity in the energy sector. The combined funding allocation is $379-million. In-market intelligence on many more opportunities in the region will be discussed at the business briefing.

The Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) once again provides a vast showcase of thousands of products from hundreds of suppliers sourced from all over the world.  SAITEX takes place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg from 25 to 27 July 2010.

Established in 1993 and acquired in 2008 by specialist trade show organisers Exhibition Management Services (EMS), SAITEX is the only multi-sector trade fair of its size and kind on the African continent.  The event hosts hundreds of exhibitors showcasing thousands of products, services and business opportunities from all corners of the world. It has developed a reputation for translating export, import, development and investment opportunities into solid business transactions.

Major Chinese Equipment Suppliers Dominate at SAITEX

China will play a major role at the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX), with over 100 Chinese companies participating in Africa’s largest international trade show. To further boost growing Sino-African trade, a dedicated China Business Opportunities Seminar will be hosted at the event. SAITEX takes place from 25 to 27 July 2010 at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand.

Chinese exhibitors will showcase a comprehensive selection of industrial products in many categories, ranging from buses, gas and diesel engines, generators, electrical transmission and distribution equipment, pumps, electric motors, insulators, light industrial products, air conditioning systems, automotive components and trim, as well as many others.

“The economy of the People's Republic of China is the third largest in the world after the United States and Japan, with a GDP of $4.99-trillion in 2009,” says John Thomson, Managing Director of Exhibition Management Services, organisers of SAITEX. “It’s also the world's fastest-growing major economy, with an average growth rate of 10% for the past 30 years. China is the second largest trading nation in the world, the largest exporter, and the second largest importer of goods. These are excellent reasons for doing business with the country.”

A substantial number of Chinese companies participating  in this year’s show, reflect growing Sino-Africa trade opportunities. Trade between China and the African continent reached an estimated $91-billion last year, despite the global recession. “Since 2000, China and Africa have established a new kind of strategic partnership featuring political equality, mutual trust and economic win-win cooperation,” says Zhang Yongpeng, Deputy Director for the Office of International Relations at the Institute for West Asian and African Studies (IWAAS).

Many of the exhibiting companies have ISO certified plants in China and supply materials, equipment and components to leading brand manufacturers around the world. The Anhui Golden Triangle Heavy Industry Machinery Company is China's leading large-scale manufacturer of chemicals and related machinery, producing a range of compound-fertiliser and bio-organic fertiliser equipment, chemical and industrial  machinery, and metallurgical and cementation machinery.

The city of Chengdu in Sichaun province is one of China’s most productive regions and is home to many major manufacturers. Over 30 companies from Chengdu will be exhibiting at SAITEX. The machinery industry plays an important role there. Chengdu’s GDP has grown massively, increasing by 14.3% in the first half of 2009 with total economic output for the year valued at almost $66-billion.
Chengdu has a solid industrial foundation in automotive parts and components, electro-mechanical components as well as mining machinery. Chengdu also has world-class aerospace manufacturing capabilities, the region being the sole supplier of rudders for Boeing’s new 787 aircraft.

Chengdu's major product categories are vehicles and automotive parts, aircraft and aeronautical components, engineering machinery, machine tools, electrical appliances, mechanical fittings, agricultural machines, power transmission and control devices, instruments and meters, and casting and forging machinery. Key enterprises include the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Corporation, Chengfa Technology, Molex, Toyota, Yamada, Shinko, HI-P and BHP.

The city is also one of China’s principal agricultural producing regions, and its ideal combination of low costs and operating conditions has attracted significant levels of food and beverage processing related Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The food industry is one of the six leading industries in Chengdu.

The China Business Opportunities Seminar entitled ‘Trading and Investment Forum between China Chengdu and South Africa’ takes place on July 26 from 2pm to 5pm. The seminar will introduce the city’s investment environment and explore major investment projects to delegates. It will also cover the region’s furniture manufacturing industry, food and beverage market, as well as similar sectors in South Africa. The seminar offers business matchmaking opportunities and will be attended by officials from the Commercial Bureau of Chengdu, the Chengdu Municipality; the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chengdu; the Chamber of Furniture Import and Export of Chengdu; the Chengdu Chamber of Food and Beverage and a delegation from 30 Chengdu enterprises.

The Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) once again provides a vast showcase of thousands of products from hundreds of suppliers sourced from all over the world.

Two of Africa’s biggest trade expos follow the world’s biggest sporting event

Following in the wake of Africa’s début Soccer World Cup comes two of Africa’s biggest trade exhibitions, attracting thousands of visitors to South Africa. The Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) along with Africa’s Big Seven Food and Beverage trade show (AB7) has attracted a combined total of over 600 exhibitors from all corners of the world – not for football, but for a foot in the door of trade with Africa and beyond, via the continent’s strongest economy.

AB7 and SAITEX will showcase thousands of product items in over 800 categories from over 35 countries, covering the broad spectrum of food and beverage industries, as well as the retail and light industrial sectors. AB7 and SAITEX take place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg, from 25 to 27 July 2010.

“This year’s Soccer World Cup had the third highest attendance of all the World Cup tournaments,” says John Thomson, Managing Director of Exhibition Management Services, organisers of both trade shows. “Almost one million foreign travellers came into the country in June for the World Cup. The country and the continent can capitalise on the positive economic impetus created by this world-famous sporting event, which is going to contribute half a percent to South Africa’s GDP this year,” adds Thomson. “And one way of capitalising on this is to participate in AB7 and SAITEX.”
South Africa is now being seen as a more viable investment and business location.  In June, the SA Chamber of Commerce & Industry Business Confidence Index increased by 2.8 index points over May 2010, indicating that business and consumer confidence in the country has been boosted.

“There is no other platform on the continent that showcases so many international companies wanting to introduce their products into the African market,” states Thomson emphatically. “They want to do business; it’s now up to Africans to pick up that initiative.”

SAITEX encourages India-Africa trade

African and Indian companies will meet this year at the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) to further cement trade relations between the two emerging economic powers. SAITEX, the largest international trade show in Africa, takes place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg from 25 to 27 July 2010.

India is South Africa’s sixth-largest Asian trading partner, with total trade between the two countries reaching $4.4-billion in 2008. Indian companies have returned en masse for this year’s SAITEX, and will be exhibiting on the Indian Pavilion to showcase new products and services.

Speaking to the Indian Consul General Vikram Doraiswami, it is clear that India is using the exhibition to boost trade and create new partnerships. “Last year, our exhibitors were very happy with the results, as most of them returned with firm orders,” he says. “I am confident that we will enjoy an even better result this year.”

Last year, two-way trade between India and Africa represented about 8 percent of India’s total world trade, worth approximately $30-billion. The Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) reports that trade between India and Africa is likely to grow by 22 percent in the next two years, reaching $55-billion in 2012, of which almost 30% will be agri-trade. This is predicted to rise to $70-billion by 2015.
“Leading Indian trade organisations will be supporting companies exhibiting on the Indian Pavilion at SAITEX this year,” says John Thomson, Managing Director of Exhibition Management Services, organisers of the trade expo. “This gives a strong indication of the commitment to Indian – African trade shown by the country. “If there is one important thing that visitors should remember, it is that SAITEX presents business owners with a unique opportunity to meet hundreds of new suppliers and access new products from around the world, all in one spot,”  adds Thomson.

International trade delegations flock to SAITEX

At least 35 countries will be represented by the 337 companies exhibiting at the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) from 25 to 27 July. Many will be there as part of a trade delegation from participating nations or regions. Under the auspices of embassies and trade federations, exhibitors will present a rich variety of products reflecting key exports of these countries.
All exhibitors are participating with the express purpose of setting up two-way trade opportunities with local agents, importers, wholesalers and distributors.
SAITEX takes place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg from 25 to 27 July 2010.

Polish Participation
“We are attending SAITEX to show the South African people that it is safe to invest in Poland,” says Ryszard Nowosielski, Commercial Counsellor for Trade and Investment Promotion at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland. ”We have been a member of the European Union since 2004. So our trade policies have to be standardised with the policies of other member countries. The result is a much higher standard of goods and commodities produced in Poland. Our country has a very commercial culture; our consumers have a wide variety of products to choose from, and we want to share this variety with southern Africa.

“Our exporters can add 30% more variety to South African retailers, particularly with food products. Poland has a long and successful reputation in the manufacturing industry – 70% of the world’s LCD screens are made in Poland, and the Fiat Panda car is totally manufactured in our country. We are also the 4th biggest exporter of furniture in the world.”

Poland exports a variety of commodities including machinery and transport equipment, manufactured and miscellaneous goods, food products and live animals. Imports are mainly machinery and transport equipment, intermediate manufactured goods, chemicals, minerals, fuels, lubricants, and related materials.

Malaysia
The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) will be hosting a pavilion at this year’s event, showcasing a range of products. “We received extremely good feedback from the companies that exhibited at the 2009 show,” says Kwai Kaun, FMM’s Manager. “We believe we can benefit more Malaysian companies by bringing more exhibitors to these shows. We would like to explore business prospects with companies in African countries, specifically in South Africa. They are actively seeking business partners, distributors, suppliers and customers.”

Eight companies will exhibit a variety of food and beverage products at the co-located Africa’s Big Seven Food and Beverage trade show, ranging from ready-made foods like biscuits, halaal frozen foods, cooking and edible oils and snack products to manufacturing and packaging machinery, health supplements and nutritional and pharmaceutical products.  The remaining six companies will be exhibiting at SAITEX offering a wide range of manufactured goods such as dental products, laminate flooring, home appliances and injection moulding machinery.

Loyal showing from Namibia
“Last year was proof that SAITEX is the show to participate in, especially now that it is linked with Africa’s Big Seven,” says Commercial Counsellor Bonaventura Hinda of the High Commission of Namibia, which has been hosting a pavilion at the show for more than five years. “It attracts the right audience for us, and we are looking forward to another rewarding event this year.”

The Commercial Office will source and exhibit a wide variety of products produced in Namibia from all export-ready companies willing to participate. “What do we as the High Commission expect to achieve from the trade show? Success, success and success!”

Namibia provides a diverse range of products including top quality gemstones, a wide range of seafood, premium meat products, world class beer, exquisite suede and soft leather and an assortment of hand-crafted chocolates. Namibia’s import and export environment is trader friendly, with banking facilities, road, rail and telecommunication infrastructure of first-world standard. With 85% of its imports originating from South Africa, Namibia now wants to diversify its trade relationships with companies across the globe.

The SAITEX trade show will give Namibian exporters the chance to meet and network with hundreds of contacts, a big draw card according to Hinda. “We look forward to networking with many potential investors and buyers.”
