SMMES seeking start-up opportunities should attend saitex
19 – 21 july 2009, gallagher convention centre

Despite the current tough and challenging economic climate, there is no better time than the present for entrepreneurs to explore business opportunities. Whether you are looking to start or expand your own business, the upcoming Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) is a ’must’ for you to visit.

In the words of business icon, Richard Branson, “Fortunes are made out of recessions.  A lot of entrepreneurs get going in the economic depths because the barriers to entry are lower."
This statement rings especially true in today’s economic conditions, even more than many may realise.

SAITEX, to be held at Gallagher Convention Centre from 19 to 21 July 2009, offers SMMEs a well-established platform to generate great business opportunities from new international sources. Under new management, SAITEX has a new face and a new approach – offering a catalyst for growth. Running alongside Exhibition Management Services’ (EMS) flagship event, “Africa’s Big Seven” (AB7), SAITEX aims to open the doors of opportunity to African, and particularly South African, entrepreneurs and SMMEs.

Hundreds of companies from around the globe will be exhibiting at SAITEX –  including Argentina, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ghana, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Poland, Turkey, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. According to John Thomson, CEO of EMS, these companies are all new to the South African market and are looking for joint ventures, agents, importers, distributors and wholesalers to assist them in establishing their business in Africa.

“Africa is a very attractive market for international trade and business at the moment and South Africa is the springboard into the rest of Africa”, says Thomson. “Entrepreneurs and new businesses and existing companies need to take advantage of the many new international opportunities that SAITEX presents.”

Since the economic crisis began in 2008, over 100 000 jobs have been lost in South Africa, but it doesn’t end there. A further 200 000 to 300 000 jobs are on the line this year as the crisis intensifies. Buyelwa Sonjica, minerals and energy minister, has stated that this has severe ramifications as every job in South Africa supports at least eight other South Africans. This means a potential impact on 2.4 million South Africans.

The Southern African Small Business Development Initiative will form an integral part of the strategy for SAITEX 2009. The initiative will focus on SMMEs and their challenges, risks and opportunities. Key players and stakeholders in the industry will be taking part in a conference to be held at the event. In South Africa, small businesses only contribute about 35% to GDP whereas in developed countries, their contribution is approximately 60%. “Small business support is sorely needed in South Africa,” says Thomson. “SAITEX offers this support and an excellent occasion to meet potential business partners.”

A professional business-to-business match-making programme will be run at the show to enhance the networking system businesses thrive on. Exhibitors and pre-registered visitors will be able to submit, free of charge, their details and business requirements. These details are assessed and profiled by match-making professionals, using various databases, additional research tools and a sophisticated computer programme to ensure that companies and individuals are ideally matched for one-on-one meetings.

Exhibitors at this year’s show are looking for joint ventures, agents, importers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers of the following products:

  1. Fast-moving consumer goods
  2. Retail-ready products
  3. Electrical and electronic items
  4. Engineering goods and services
  5. Building and construction products
  6. Food, beverages and catering equipment
  7. Footwear and leather products
  8. Industrial products
  9. Manufacturing technologies
  10. Plastic ware, home ware, kitchenware and cookware
  11. White and brown goods
  12. Home entertainment equipment
  13. Office equipment
  14. Furniture
  15. Hardware
  16. Stationery
  17. Sports equipment
  18. Textiles

Now in its 16th year, SAITEX is being held at the same location as AB7 for the first time. AB7 is the continent’s largest food industry event, with 239 exhibitors from 19 countries and 7000 visitors from 43 countries. The parallel hosting of these two events will have an extremely positive effect for any business visiting these two successful events. SAITEX is truly an international opportunity not to be missed by any individual starting out or even well-established businesses, in the above-mentioned industries.

SAITEX- A ‘Two-Way Street’ for Trade Opportunities

“South Africa is the two-way trade portal of Africa. Not only is it a way for international trade suppliers to access the African markets to the north but it is also a conduit for
African countries to access the international markets.” This is according to John Thomson of Exhibition Management Services (EMS), organisers of SAITEX (The 16th Southern African International Trade Expo), to be held from 19 to 21 July 2009. “SAITEX is the perfect ‘two-way street’ for trade opportunities,” continues Thomson, adding that SAITEX it is the most international show of its kind on the continent.

SAITEX 2009 to be held at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand focuses on cross-border as well as international trade. Exporters from over 34 countries will be attending the show exhibiting a large variety of retail products, mostly food and beverages but also including medical supplies, health and beauty products, handcrafted items, leather products, clothing and jewellery, to mention but a few. An import/export business and trade fair with exhibitors representing various industry sectors, SAITEX is the only multi-sectoral trade event in South Africa.

Exhibitors and visitors will be able to meet and learn from their foreign counterparts on how to trade across Africa and the continents, whilst identifying new markets and products for their respective businesses. There will be large representation from countries like Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Poland, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Whilst closer to home Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Malawi are all participating.

A free business matchmaking programme will be run at the expo increasing opportunities for businesses to interact and identify profitable opportunities. Networking with companies from across the globe will ensure all participants benefit from their experience at SAITEX.

SAITEX – NEW MANAGEMENT – NEW VISION
19 – 21 JULY 2009, GALLAGHER CONVENTION CENTRE

The Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) enjoys a reputation internationally as the ‘gateway to African trade’ and has been in existence since 1993.

Attendance figures had been dropping off in the latter events as a result of a number of factors. None of which had been previously addressed.

This is now all set to change as the new owners of the event Exhibition Management Services (Pty) Ltd (EMS) re-position, re-profile and re-time the event.

Traditionally held in October EMS have moved the show dates forward to July in order to co-locate SAITEX alongside their flagship event Africa’s Big Seven (AB7).

“We have done this to ensure that the synergy created by this coupling will deliver maximum benefits to both sets of exhibitors and visitors” said John Thomson, MD of EMS. He continued “Since its inception 16 years ago SAITEX has successfully promoted increasing trade between South Africa, African and other foreign countries - it is without doubt the most experienced international trade platform in Southern Africa – a platform EMS now intends to roll out into the rest of Africa”.

The co-hosting of SAITEX alongside AB7 is the first step in achieving this aim as well as bolstering visitor attendance.

Africa’s Big Seven, the only event of its kind on the continent, is a composite of seven separate but co-located events which showcase all aspects of the international food and beverage industries. With SAITEX being repositioned as a non-food retail showcase, the event complements AB7 – which has tremendous spin-offs for both exhibitors and visitors.  SAITEX will run in an adjacent hall to AB7, taking advantage of the 7,000 visitors from 43 countries and exhibitors from 19 that already attend AB7. The number of international pavilions confirmed for this year’s AB7 is more proof that EMS is delivering buyers from the continent. Countries that have confirmed their participation include Britain, China, Turkey, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Poland, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria, USA, Korea, Indonesia, Germany and the Netherlands.

Over the years, trading partners from as many as 40 different countries have supported SAITEX, using it as a springboard into Africa. Trade figures between Africa and China, India and Brazil are confirmation of the growing trade opportunities between Africa and the rest of the world. Sino-Africa trade reached $72 billion in the first eight months of 2008, a 62% increase from the previous year. Similarly India has stated its intention to triple its trade with Africa over the next five years to $100-billion.  Trade with Brazil has also increase significantly - during 2006, imports from Africa totalled US$8.1 billion, while exports to Africa were US$7.5 billion.

The only multi-sectoral trade fair of its size and kind in Africa, SAITEX hosts hundreds of exhibitors, showcasing products, services and opportunities from all over the world. Exhibitors get exposure to thousands of agents, distributors, importers and wholesalers with well-established infrastructure and trade networks throughout Africa and the world.

EMS, a long established exhibition organizer (1981), acquired title and rights to SAITEX in November 2008. The company is one of Africa’s most experienced exhibition organisers, with a 28-year track record of delivering successful trade fairs throughout the continent.

Opportunities for entrepreneurs at saitex –
Four reasons you need to be there!
19 – 21 july 2009, gallagher convention centre

Looking to start a business? Considering expanding? Visiting SAITEX, the upcoming Southern African International Trade Exhibition is a ‘must’. Despite the current challenging economic climate, there is no better time for entrepreneurs and business owners to explore new opportunities.

Richard Branson believes,“Fortunes are made out of recessions.  A lot of entrepreneurs get going in the economic depths because the barriers to entry are lower." This statement rings especially true in today’s economic conditions.

Four reasons you need to be at SAITEX:

  1. Explore new business opportunities: SAITEX offers a well-established ‘platform of opportunity.’ Hundreds of global companies from countries like Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Kingdom will be exhibiting.  These companies seek joint ventures, agents, importers, distributors and wholesalers to assist in establishing their businesses in Africa.
  2. Entrance to SAITEX is free: Anyone will be able to experience this expo first-hand!

SAITEX 2009 promoting South-South Trade

It may be a happy coincidence or it may be simply that it reflects the current realities of South Africa’s positioning in world trade. Whatever the reason, this year’s SAITEX EXPO (Southern African International Trade Exhibition) falls neatly in line with the aspirations of incoming Minister of Trade & Industry, Rob Davies.
According to a recent report in Business Day, one area that Davies intends focusing on is South-South trade. Here SAITEX “walks the talk’ with dozens of international exhibitors from South America, Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador and even more from China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
And there is no ‘shabby’ representation from Africa either with companies from Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi all taking up space at the expo.
In order to facilitate trade between this diversity of business interests the organisers of SAITEX, Exhibition Management Services, offer a free Business Matchmaking Service.
All exhibitors and pre-registered visitors are invited to submit – at no charge - their details and requirements. These are then assessed and profiled by a sophisticated computer system to ensure that companies and individuals with common interests are effectively matched. The meetings then take place on a one-to-one basis, opening the doors to trade and partnership.

Around the World in Three Days at SAITEX

“Why travel abroad seeking export deals when you can meet over 355 companies from over 39 different countries right here at home, under one roof at the combined Africa’s Big Seven and SAITEX expos?” asks John Thomson of Exhibition Management Services (EMS), organiser of the events. SAITEX which is the largest multi-sectoral trade event of its kind on the African continent runs alongside the annual food industry event Africa’s Big Seven at Gallagher Convention Centre from 19 to 21 July 2009.

Exhibitors will include a large representation from overseas countries like Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Turkey. African participation is substantial with exhibitors from countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

An import/export business and trade fair, SAITEX is a ‘must visit’ for any entrepreneur, organisation or small business interested in extending its ‘global reach’ in trade. There is a growing need for South African traders to move away from exclusively exporting to traditional markets, such as the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany. Quoted in an Engineering News article, Richard Wade, Senior Manager of Wesgro IQ stated, “The Western Cape’s fastest-growing export markets are Brazil, Russia, India, China (BRIC) and other African countries.”

“Now is the time for the rest of the country to follow suit!” says John Thomson. “SAITEX is the perfect opportunity for exporters to tap into this market considering there will be traders representing all the aforementioned countries, except Russia which we have substituted with Ukraine.” With the free business matchmaking programme on offer, there will be ample opportunity to cement trade relations. Exhibitors are automatically entered into the programme at no cost; all online visitors are asked to fill in a document at the bottom of their application to ensure they are listed on the database. A highly-sophisticated computer programme assesses all the details to ensure that companies and individuals with the same business interests are matched. Setting up focused business meetings has never been this easy! Register for SAITEX now and clinch the deal!
