In 2006, South Africa imported lighting to the value of US$39.0 million, Point of Sale systems worth US$29.6 million, fridges, freezers and display cabinets worth US$13.2 million, vending machines worth US$9.4 million and furniture to house fridges and freezers worth US$6.4 million.
Over the three-year period from 2004 to 2006, imports in all the key categories increased significantly. Furniture for fridges and freezers increased by 194%, followed by fridges and freezers, display units etc. which increased by 183%, vending machines by 96%, point-of-sale equipment by 65% and lighting by 60%.
