Currently more than 47% of South Africa’s food expenditure is accounted for by packaged products and US$ 2.1 billion of the country’s US$3.7 billion packaging bill is spent on food and beverage packaging.
FoodTech Africa is designed to provide food and beverage manufacturers with the necessary inputs to meet the changing demands imposed by consumers.
According to statistics South Africa sales of locally manufactured food and beverages in 2007 was valued at R 190.6 billion.
Ingredients, Additives & Flavourings
South Africa is a net exporter of ingredients, additives and flavourings, with total value of imports in 2006 of US$894.1 million compared to exports of US$1.8 billion in the same period. Imports have increased by 61% over the 3-year period 2004 to 2006, and exports have increased by 10%, which indicates that the market for imported products is growing.
Manufacturing technologies, production, processing and packaging equipment
South Africa is a net importer of manufacturing technologies and production, processing and packaging equipment. In 2006 total imports of the key equipment was worth US$463.5 million compared to US$93.2 million in exports. Imports of manufacturing and production equipment grew by 60% from 2004 to 2006, compared to a negative growth of -3% in exports over the same three-year period.
