THIS EXPO HELPS YOU KEEP
THOSE PROFITS HOT

Running any business can be tough, running an SMME business tougher, but running a small independent retail business has to be the toughest of the lot. Cash flow, pilferage, stock loss, available shelf space, red tape and increased competition for your buyers’ Rand all require 24-hour a day attention.

For your business to survive, -and profit, you need to be on top of all these problems and still embrace the constant changes that can help to keep your business ahead of the next.

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS AHEAD OF YOUR COMPETITOR.

You don't have to do this alone. For over 10 years, the Pan Africa Trade Exhibition (part of Africa's Big Seven Expo) has been delivering the best of "what's new in retailing" from around the world. Each year thousands of retailers descend on the exhibition halls at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, Gauteng to source new products, find services and equipment that allow them to run their businesses more efficiently and network with other business owners.

For owners of small independent stores in this highly competitive industry, this once-a-year opportunity can make a big difference to their business over the next 12 months.

Just finding one new idea makes a visit to the exhibition worthwhile. There is no entry fee for genuine business owners so the only investment is your time.

NOW CONSIDER THIS

Visitors to last year's show were interviewed as they left; a whoping 93% of them said they found their visit worthwhile; 89% said they made new business contacts and 92% of these visitors - remember they come from all over the country - said they would visit again in 2007.

Finally, the organisers open Africa's Big Seven on a Sunday so that these hard-working independent businessmen get the opportunity to attend and benefit.

So if you have never visited either the Expo, its conferences or workshops before, you should put these dates in your diary now - July 15-17. If you have visited before, tell your colleagues to join you for a very profitable day out.

R56 MILLION PROJECT TO ADDRESS FOOD STANDARD DEFICIENCIES

A four-year R56 million (£ 4m) project to help Southern African producers meet the strict food standard requirements increasingly being demanded worldwide will see its first practical application at the FoodTech Africa Expo in July.

Funded by the British Government, the "Southern African Regional Standards Programme" is designed to address constraints experienced by agricultural producers and food processors in gaining market access due to stringent product standard requirements.

EuropGAP, HACCP, organic certification, Fairtrade, minimum residue levels and codex requirements are examples of the types of standards increasingly demanded by the EU countries and their supermarket chains.

Addressing infrastructural constraints is one component of the programme.  Setting up laboratories, training government personnel and identifying legislative gaps are the kind of activities that will be funded over the next four years.

Also part of the standards programme is the Supermarkets Innovation Fund.  This sector is open to producer groups, private firms, industry associations and agencies active in the agriculture and food processing sectors facing specific certification or agricultural standards issues preventing them from supplying regional and international markets.

It is these fund sector issues that will be addressed at an Agribusiness Development conference and technical workshops running concurrently with the FoodTech Africa exhibition at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, from July 15 - 17 2007.  For further details contact Lineke Fleischer on admin@exhibitionsafrica.com

EXPO SUPPLIES
THE AFRICAN MARKET

Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) an annual event staged in Johannesburg is going from strength to strength thanks to the attention now being paid to this continent by the world’s previously disinterested trading nations.
India and China are leading this charge and in the case of AB7 India has won the day. The Government has nominated AB7 as their chosen portal into Africa; becoming Partner Nation to the 2007 show. This international stamp of approval followed the call by India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry for a strategy to promote the export of processed foods. India is also the world’s largest supplier of food processing equipment.

The last expo held in July 2006 attracted over 7,000 qualified trade buyers from 31 countries – a much larger than average attendance for a specialized trade show held outside of Europe – but it’s not all about numbers. Almost 51% of the attendees were owners, managing directors, or directors of companies and could authorize purchases for their business.

This expo – its name comes from its seven constituent elements (see box) – is the only event of its kind in Africa and is rapidly developing into a continental clearing house where fresh and processed foods are displayed for export, specialty foods and beverages are marketed to Africa’s importers, wholesalers and retailers and manufacturing processing and packaging technologies are traded internationally.

What makes Africa’s Big Seven so unique is the fact that it really is the only trade exhibition that is a genuine portal into Africa. It is the only forum where all role players can meet under one roof – farmers, manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers and everyone else in between.

Market forces reflected
“Every edition of AB7 is updated to reflect current world trends and meet the demands of local market conditions” says John Thomson MD of the organisers Exhibition Management Services. “Our 2007 expo will showcase some really exciting topics. Our research indicated a rapidly escalating interest expressed by visitors in halaal products. As a result of this, and following extensive negotiations we have tied up with the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA) to both present the exhibition “Halaal World” and facilitate the “2nd International Halaal Conference”. These events will see speakers, visitors and delegates from around the world converging on South Africa in July to investigate the halaal readiness of our food industry”, he concluded.

Ebi Lockhat, spokesman for SANHA was equally enthusiastic “Without doubt this is one of the most relevant and significant platforms for all role players in the World of Halaal to access the burgeoning African Market. We are delighted to add value to it.”

Another first for 2007 will be the International Trade Fair and Conference being staged at Africa’s Big Seven by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council. Like the Halaal Conference this is expected to attract interested parties from throughout sub Sahara Africa and the Far East. This event called MA-POTS 2007, Malaysia-Africa Palm Oil Trade Fair & Seminar, is being coordinated by Durban based MPOC representative Uthaya Kumar. Kumar stated “MA-POTS 2007 will be the opportunity for a Malaysia- Africa partnership for food, fuel and feed industries. “ For more information please contact the Malaysian Palm Oil Council, Regional Office in Durban on +27-31-5666 171 or email: potsafrica2007@mpoc.org.za

“There simply is no other opportunity like this to network, show your wares, find suppliers and gain access to one of the world's most rapidly-growing consumer markets,” say organiser, John Thomson.

Data collected from visitors and exhibitors confirms his claims. 89% of all respondents said they made new contacts at the show while 92% said they would certainly attend again next year. 98% of visitors believed Africa's Big 7 expo is of value to the retail trade and 88% said they would definitely recommend that their business associates attend future shows. In addition, approximately half of all visitors said they could authorise purchases for their companies.

“Anyone wanting to do business in or with Africa needs to be at Africa's Big Seven Exhibition,” Thomson says. The 2007 event is scheduled for July 15-17.

Meat Conference and Workshop
planned for Africa’s Big Seven

Africa’s International Fair for the Meat Industries (IFMA Africa) which is staged every second year will be leading the show line-up at this July’s Africa’s Big Seven expo.

‘This is the 5th IFMA in the series” states Lineke van der Brugghen for organisers Exhibition Management Services (EMS). “That effectively means the show has been running for ten years and we wanted to benchmark the occasion with a significant development”.

EMS have tied up with Global Conference Group Institute for International Research (IIR) to present a two day conference entitled “Excellence in Meat Management Africa 2007”. This aims to promote world standards in traceability, quality, safety, classification, inspection, beneficiation, processing and export of the carcass.

A panel of expert speakers chaired by Manie Booysen, CEO of the South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC), will detail best practice from ‘Farm to Fork”.

EMS and IIR will also offer an optional one day practical workshop conducted by Rolf Uys, Africa manager for AIB International. The workshop addresses efficient food factory auditing based on the latest technology from the USA.

Building on the success of the 2006 edition of Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) which attracts 7,000 trade visitors from 31 countries, EMS are really ratcheting up the show profile for 2007.

Other significant developments at this year’s expo which takes place at Gallagher Estate Midrand from July 15-17, include: India as Partner Nation, Halaal World – the 1st Halaal Trade Fair, the 2nd International Halaal Conference, MAPOTS- the Malaysia Palm Oil Promotion Council’s Trade Fair & Conference as well as Home Meal Replacement Workshops.

Full details of all these events plus the full profile of Africa’s Big Seven can be obtained from Lineke van der Brugghen at +27(0)11 – 783 7250 or email: admin@exhibitionsafrica.com
